World playing with Pakistan’s Balls

A Pakistani-made football shines through in the action Apart from their love for the sport, the Pakistanis will have a special reason to rejoice, even though their team is not participating in the action.

Along with China, Pakistan is supplying soccer balls for use in the  mega event, which is held in winter instead of summer due to the hot weather in the Qatari capital.

The official match ball for the 2022 World Cup was launched in March by Adidas in Doha, which was named “The Journey”, an Arabic word meaning “journey”. Forward Sports, based in the northeastern suburbs of Sialkot,

Khawaja Msood Akhtar (CEO Forward Sports)

which also makes footballs for the Bundesliga, French League and UEFA Champions League, made the trip for the mega event. The company was also the official soccer supplier for the 2014 and 2018 World Cups in Brazil and Russia. The city on the border of India has been known for producing the finest sporting goods and supplying footballs for huge events for a long time.

Producing high quality footballs is not Sialkot’s only forte. It also exports sporting goods ranging from cricket bats to hockey sticks and from shiny balls (cricket and hockey) to other accessories such as kits, shoes and gloves. The country earns $1 billion annually from sporting goods exports, including $350 million to $500 million from soccer balls alone. The football used in the tournament is technically called “Thermo Bonded”, which was first introduced at the 2014 World Cup. Prior to that, Pakistan had hand-stitched football in most of the World Cups from the 1990s to 2010.
