Urban Meyer Endorses Marvin Harrison Jr. for Heisman: Is He College Football’s Best Player?

Marvin Harrison Jr.

Urban Meyer, the former Ohio State head coach and current FOX “Big Noon Kickoff” panelist, has a passionate belief: Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State’s star wide receiver, deserves to be recognized as the best player in college football and a legitimate contender for the Heisman Trophy. Harrison’s 2023 season has been nothing short of spectacular, with 889 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in just eight games. He’s consistently surpassed the 100-yard mark in the majority of those games, with several performances exceeding 160 yards.

Meyer’s insistence that the Heisman Trophy should go to the best player, irrespective of their position, underscores his admiration for Harrison’s well-rounded abilities. Historically, the Heisman has primarily favored quarterbacks and running backs, making Meyer’s support for a wide receiver all the more remarkable.

Ohio State’s top ranking in the initial 2023 College Football Playoff standings can be attributed in no small part to Harrison’s exceptional contributions. Even when faced with an ankle injury during a crucial game against Notre Dame, he made a game-changing catch during the Buckeyes’ last-minute, game-winning drive. His 11-reception, 162-yard performance against Penn State, a formidable Big Ten rival, further underscores his pivotal role on the team.

Meyer also highlights Harrison’s physical and intangible qualities that position him as an enticing NFL prospect. His impressive “measurables” – height, weight, strength, vertical jump, speed, and acceleration – make him an attractive asset for the professional league. Moreover, his “immeasurables,” including his legendary work ethic and unwavering competitive spirit, have earned admiration from Ohio State head coach Ryan Day.

Meyer also acknowledges that Harrison may face fierce competition for the Heisman Trophy, particularly from Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, adding an extra layer of excitement to this year’s Heisman race in the Big Ten. It’s an intriguing and open field, with no clear-cut favorite, and Harrison is undoubtedly a central figure in the conversation.
