The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said today, Friday, that two-time grandmaster Simona Halep of Romania, has been provisionally suspended after she tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat.

Halep, ranked ninth in the world, was tested during the US Open and her A and B samples confirmed the drug’s presence.

“Simona Halep, a 31-year-old Romanian tennis player, has been provisionally suspended under Section 7.12.1 of the Tennis Anti-Doping Program (TADP) 2022,” the organization said in a statement.

The sample was divided into Samples A and Sample B and subsequent analysis found Sample A to contain FG-4592 (Roxadustat), a banned substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List for 2022.

Halep called the ban “the biggest shock of her life”.

“Throughout my career, the idea of cheating has never crossed my mind, because it completely goes against all the values I was taught by. Faced with such an unfair situation, I feel completely confused and betrayed,” she wrote on Twitter.
