Luka Modric Croatia head coach Zlatko Delek said it would be a “pity” if he retired.

Modric and Croatia’s World Cup dream ended with a 3-0 semi-final defeat by Argentina on Tuesday, with the team now destined for a third-place play-off with Morocco.

The game could be 37-year-old Modric’s last in red and white checkers, following a decorated international career with 161 caps including a World Cup final and 23 goals.

Modric has yet to make a decision on his future at international level ahead of the Morocco clash with Euro 2024, some 18 months away.

“He was very disappointed yesterday, the loss and the match was difficult for him,” Delak told reporters.

“It’s logical that he feels that way (considering retirement), it was really hard for him.

I hope he stays in the national team. Of course, he will decide for himself. We have a game on Saturday and will have a good talk after that. If Modric says goodbye, it will be difficult for me.

Delak was full of praise for the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, who has made more than 300 appearances for Real Madrid.

Delek said that if Luca says goodbye to the national team, it will be sad and sad for all the fans around the world.

“It will be difficult for me too if he makes another decision, but the whole world respects Modric. It will be good if he continues.”
